Huawei’s CFO makes an unconvincing argument why she won’t flee

Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou is trying desperately to convince Canada to grant her bail. Prosecutors have already argued extensively why Meng, the daughter of Huawei’s founder, is a flight risk, including the fact she had at least seven passports, two of which were seized by Canadian authorities. But her lawyers seem to believe that having her husband and private security guards—who she’d pay for—watch over her might convince the British Columbia Supreme Court she won’t flee the

Sundar Pichai leaves the door open to Google launching a censored search engine in China

Google CEO Sundar Pichai doesn’t have plans for the company to launch a censored search engine in China—for now, at least. Testifying before the House Judiciary Committee yesterday (Dec. 11), Pichai—the most recent tech giant leader to be grilled by US Congress—spent more than three hours answering questions about the search algorithm’s alleged political biases, user privacy, and its plans to re-enter China, among other issues. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee had clear reservations about Proj

Why the wives of China’s persecuted human-rights lawyers shaved their heads

Among the most visible advocates of human rights in China are the wives of those languishing in prison. Four wives of human-rights lawyers shaved their heads this week to protest the government’s persecution of their husbands, who were arrested during a concerted crackdown against 300 activists and lawyers in China starting on July 9, 2015, an event that’s since become known as the “709” incident. Since then, the women have worked tirelessly to keep the plight of their husbands in the spotligh

2018 was a terrific year for journalism, but a terrible one for journalists

The year 2018 has seen amazing works of journalism, from exposes of how Facebook used our data (paywall), to uncovering remotely the spread of detention camps (paywall) for Muslims in China, to the battle for the future of affirmative action in America, to how a massacre in Myanmar unfolded, among many others. But from Annapolis to Istanbul, it also was a time of savage attacks on journalists. This year, more than 250 journalists were imprisoned globally according to the Committee to Protect Jo

A Skype video call can be illegal in Singapore

Singapore is infamous for its stringent enforcement of anti-littering laws and chewing gum ban, but another action that could land you in hot water is simply making an online video call. That’s what happened to Singaporean activist Jolovan Wham, 39, who was found guilty on Thursday (Jan. 3) for organizing an “illegal assembly” after he had Hong Kong student democracy activist Joshua Wong speak to a conference over a Skype call in 2016. Wham was also convicted for refusing to sign his statement

Thailand said Monday (Jan. 7) it won’t repatriate a Saudi teen who fled her family and was detained at Bangkok’s airport, from where she tweeted an account of barricading herself against officials trying to put her on a flight back to the Middle East. Rahaf Mohammad al-Qunun, 18, arrived on Sunday at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport headed for Australia, where she planned to seek asylum. She told news agency AFP that on arrival, she was met by Saudi and Kuwaiti officials who confiscated her trave

After winning the fight against deportation from Thailand, the 18-year-old Saudi Arabian woman who fled her family in search of asylum in Australia has been given refugee status by the United Nations. Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun is currently under the protection of UN officials in Thailand, after she was detained in Bangkok airport while on a layover from Kuwait to Australia on Monday (Jan. 7), where her passport was confiscated by Saudi and Kuwaiti officials. Canberra said that she would have to g

“I did it”: Saudi teen who fled her family gets asylum in Canada

A Saudi teen who fled her family and opened a Twitter account as part of a daring bid to seek her freedom has been granted asylum in Canada. The announcement came after a Thai official on Friday (Jan. 11) said that Australia and Canada had both granted asylum to the Saudi teen, Rahaf al-Qunun, CNN reported. The official later confirmed al-Qunun was on her way to Canada, after a week of twists and turns that began with her trapped in Bangkok airport, fighting being sent back to her family. Al-Q
